Preview:
Tonight (Saturday, March 29, 2025), UFC Flyweight contenders Brandon Moreno and Steve Erceg will face off at UFC Mexico City inside the CDMX Arena in Mexico City, Mexico.
For Moreno, the issue in recent years has been his inconsistency. While he’s undoubtedly talented, he has sometimes depended on reckless overhands in fights with elite contenders like Brandon Royval. Nevertheless, he nearly defeated “Raw Dog” despite a poor game plan. That loss prompted the former champion to take a break, which ultimately worked out as he delivered a dominant performance against Amir Albazi in his last fight. As for Erceg, his journey remains difficult. The Australian fighter was thrust into a title shot after only three UFC wins against Alexandre Pantoja, almost pulling off an upset. However, a knockout loss to Kai Kara-France hurt his standing, though he wasn’t given a step back in competition. Now, at 29, he faces an even tougher test.
Moreno, a multiple-time Flyweight champion, earned his status for a reason. He began his career as a submission fighter with a brawling style but has evolved into an elite fighter in all areas. His boxing, in particular, has become a major strength, and he can still scramble with the best of them on the floor. The most important weapon in this matchup is Moreno’s jab, which is the best in the division. When he is in range and gets that lead hand working, his combinations and counters are fluid. His kicks land, his takedowns are timed well — everything flows. So, the goal for Moreno early on is to throw the jab consistently and use feints. It would also be wise for him to pursue takedowns, as he’s a superior scrambler with proven cardio. If he can catch a kick or time a shot under a right hand, he can capitalize with a submission or win the round.
Erceg is a skilled all-around fighter, which explains why he could hang with Pantoja. His Muay Thai and boxing are well-known, but Erceg also has a strong wrestling background (from Australia) and a black belt in jiu-jitsu. Though winning won’t be easy, Erceg can compete with Moreno in every aspect. Since Moreno’s jab is vital to his success, disrupting it should be a key focus for Erceg. Without the jab, Moreno tends to revert to wild swings and brawling, which he hasn’t fully outgrown despite his technical improvements. Erceg is a solid fighter, but Moreno has a slight advantage across the board. He’s more accustomed to five-round fights with elite competition and is generally a little sharper. If Moreno is on top of his game, Erceg will need to make significant moments like knockdowns or takedowns to earn the judges’ favor.
