Israel Adesanya has reigned as one of the best in the Middleweight division for years, but after a title loss to Sean Strickland and a second defeat to Dricus Du Plessis, questions have started to arise. At 35, Adesanya is no longer the same dominant force, while 29-year-old Imavov enters his prime and presents a major challenge. Imavov has the skills and experience to contend with anyone in the division, making him a dangerous opponent for Adesanya.
Adesanya’s elite striking has been a hallmark of his success, with his ability to control distance and land devastating kicks and counters. However, his recent performances have shown signs of limitations. Imavov isn’t the most dynamic striker, but his jab is strong, and his precision makes him a dangerous foe. Adesanya will need to counter that jab effectively, something he’s done in the past with right low kicks, Southpaw hand-fighting, and body shots. Imavov may also look to take the fight to the ground, but Adesanya has been tough to take down throughout his career, though he occasionally struggles when he turns his back.
Imavov’s boxing is impressive, with a punishing jab and crisp combinations. While he struggled with wrestling early in his career, he’s developed that part of his game and shown success against strong competition. Though he doesn’t have a significant edge over Adesanya in most areas, his youth and the fact that he has less mileage on his body could work in his favor. Adesanya, on the other hand, showed signs of fading in his recent fights, and if Imavov can push the pace and keep the pressure on, he could find success as the younger fighter.
Though Adesanya demonstrated some solid skills in his last fight, it’s clear that he’s no longer at his physical peak. Imavov’s style, built on a strong jab and methodical striking, aligns with Adesanya’s strengths, but the veteran still holds the edge. The key question is whether Imavov can disrupt Adesanya’s rhythm with his pace or wrestling, though neither of these tactics seems likely to overwhelm the former champion. Imavov remains untested at the highest level, and this will be his biggest challenge yet. If Adesanya is properly motivated, he should be able to secure the victory, potentially by decision or a late stoppage.
