UFC 312 is bringing two championship bouts to Australia on Saturday, February 8, 2025, and history suggests something exciting is bound to happen. Whether the Octagon lands in Adelaide, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Perth, or Sydney, UFC events in Australia have a knack for delivering surprises. From the introduction of the flyweight division to cards where every bout ends in a finish, and from Holly Holm’s stunning victory over Ronda Rousey to Sean Strickland’s upset over Israel Adesanya, Australian UFC events always leave fans talking. This weekend’s event at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney promises more of the same.
The night is headlined by a middleweight championship rematch, with the strawweight title also on the line in the co-main event. The lineup features a blend of rising stars and local fighters, many of whom fit into both categories. In the main event, Dricus Du Plessis and Sean Strickland will meet again, just over a year after their first fight at UFC 297 in Toronto. Du Plessis is set to defend his middleweight title for the second time, aiming to maintain his undefeated record in the Octagon and extend his winning streak to eleven. After winning the title in January, Du Plessis defeated Israel Adesanya via submission at UFC 305 in Perth, cementing his place at the top of the division and settling their rivalry.
Strickland, who previously claimed the middleweight title by beating Adesanya in the same arena, lost the belt at the start of 2024. He rebounded with a strong showing against Paulo Costa at UFC 302, though the fight ended in a controversial split decision. Now, Strickland looks to become the second fighter after Adesanya to reclaim the middleweight title twice, seeking revenge against Du Plessis.
Before that rematch, strawweight champion Zhang Weili will defend her title against undefeated challenger Tatiana Suarez in an exciting co-main event. Zhang only fought once in 2024, but it was a memorable victory over Yan Xiaonan in a thrilling bout at UFC 300. The two-time champion has won four straight fights since regaining her title at the end of 2023 and will try to hand Suarez her first professional loss. Suarez, a former Olympic wrestling prospect and Ultimate Fighter winner, has long been seen as a future champion. With six wins and four finishes since her reality show stint, she now has the chance to become the sixth woman to hold the 115-pound title by defeating Zhang and keeping her perfect record intact.
The final non-title bout of the evening features heavyweight sluggers Justin Tafa and Tallison Teixeira. Tafa, 31, looks to bounce back from a unanimous decision loss to Karl Williams, his only fight in 2024. With a 4-4 record and one no-contest in his first nine UFC fights, Tafa has won all of his bouts by stoppage. He’ll aim for another knockout in Sydney, following his win over Austen Lane at UFC 293. Teixeira, part of the 2024 Dana White’s Contender Series class, makes his UFC debut in Australia. The Brazilian boasts a perfect 7-0 record, all by stoppage, and will look to keep that streak alive in his first Octagon appearance.
Australian light heavyweight Jimmy Crute returns to action against Brazil’s Rodolfo Bellato. Crute made a splash early in his UFC career, earning his contract on the second season of Dana White’s Contender Series and winning four of his first five fights. However, after four winless outings, including three stoppage losses, the 28-year-old took a break from fighting in mid-2023. Bellato earned his UFC contract on his second try in the Contender Series, after a loss to Vitor Petrino in his first attempt. He made his promotional debut in late 2023, overcoming adversity to defeat Ihor Potieria, and now looks to continue his success in Sydney.
The UFC 312 pay-per-view main card opens with Jake Matthews taking on Argentina’s Francisco Prado in Matthews’ first welterweight bout. The 30-year-old Matthews is the second longest-serving Australian in the UFC, after Robert Whittaker, and will make his 21st Octagon appearance. He’s had mixed results in his last seven fights but hopes to build on his win over Phil Rowe at UFC 302 and secure his third consecutive victory. Prado moves up to welterweight after a 1-2 run at lightweight, highlighted by a knockout of Ottman Azaitar and a Fight of the Night performance against Daniel Zellhuber. At just 22, Prado’s adjustment to the new division against a seasoned opponent like Matthews will be interesting to watch.
Also on the card, lightweights Quillan Salkilld and Anshul Jubli, both 7-1, will square off early in the event. Salkilld, 25, earned his UFC spot with a decision win over Gauge Young on Dana White’s Contender Series, extending his win streak to seven. Jubli won the first Road to UFC lightweight tournament but suffered a stoppage loss to Mike Breeden at UFC 294. UFC 312: Du Plessis vs Strickland 2 is scheduled for February 8, 2025, with the main card starting at 10 p.m. ET (February 9 at 3 a.m. UK, 7:30 a.m. IST).
